I have always equated Authentic Assessment to on the job training. An electrician apprentice can learn how to hook up wires from a schematic and write a report on it or he can work in a mock setting getting the real world experience. We talk about taking students knowledge and transforming it into procedural knowledge, some times we can take learning skills and turn them into procedural skills. Learning by doing.
Online Learning Assessment Levels of Authenticity
http://www.uwex.edu/disted/conference/Resource_library/handouts/03Info_H03.pdf
Traditional --------------------------------------------- Authentic
Selecting a Response ------------------------------------ Performing a Task
Contrived --------------------------------------------------------------- Real-life
Recall/Recognition ------------------------------- Construction/Application
Teacher-structured ------------------------------------- Student-structured
Indirect Evidence -------------------------------------------- Direct Evidence
I like the idea that Authentic assessment is a tool that enhances traditional assessment. I don't see authentic work replacing traditional, but as a part of a teachers tool box to create new learning experiences.
